Key Elements of an Effective Indoor Landscape

We still have the genetics of wild animals. We see plants as our source of safety, our home, our habitat. They help reduce the chaos in our concrete jungle. But they don’t only belong outside our premises. We need them inside our houses, our offices, our wellness centres, our schools –literally everywhere.
While this sounds like a great idea, it is important to know where to place these plants and how to fuse them to get the right flow of energy especially in the commercial, retail or hospitality setting. This can only be achieved by having effective indoor landscaping techniques. And for such an effective indoor landscape to be realised, we must consider these key elements:
1. Size of your interior space
Indoor Landscape at Royal Mirage
The size of your interior is one of the most important factors to consider when looking for effective indoor landscape. This goes without saying that lack of space directly translates to less placement of indoor plants. It could mean you can’t have greenery on the corridor when there's barely enough space to walk through.
However, there are different types of indoor plants that can accommodate such inadequacies. You can place a windowsill garden along your windows to give the illusion that the outdoor vegetation seamlessly transitions into your premises. You must ensure that these plants are similar to those on the outside for the best results.

On the other hand, if you have larger spaces, large plants will fit the bill. Again, you don’t want to use minuscule plants that will go unnoticed especially in wide rooms. Placing a palm plant at the corner of the room will give that corner some natural ambience. Always ensure when using live plants, natural light hits them as much as possible. That way, they won't dry off or grow unhealthily.
2. Form of indoor plants
Plants come in various shape and forms. They can be pyramidal, round, columnar or v-shaped. Not all shapes are fit for every indoor landscape. But depending on your preferences and interest, you can choose which form to use.
Topiary Shapes for Indoor LandscapeFor instance, placing a pyramidal plant between, say, two furniture items along the wall will give the room some symmetry. Round plants tend to fit well in a space of their own where there are no other items. This makes them stand out and be visible from all directions. You can also place a round plant at the center of a room.
Be sure to experiment with different shapes of plants and see what fits perfectly in your interior. The idea here is to try and be consistent as much as possible with the outdoors.
3. Texture of plants
Potted Cacti - Indoor Landscape Element example of consistent colour and textureIndoor plants can be used to create a contrast to grab everyone’s attention. For instance, rough plants can be placed in a room with fine polishing. Say in a music room with a fine-polished piano, violin, guitar, benches and smooth walls. Place a cactus against any of these fixtures and see the magic that the simple addition could create.
On the other hand, you can recreate a contrast in other rooms too. Placing a young soft plant in a "chaotic" office room will make a difference.
Another rule of thumb is to let pots be of the same texture and be consistent throughout the room. This means to not mix up planters to avoid a disorganised or unprofessional look. Try to ensure that the colour of the pots match or complement the colour of the room.

5 Reasons Why Hot Desking is A Great Way to Work

We live in a world where we’ve got over the need for a permanent desk, it creates a freer, more relaxed
working atmosphere –  what’s not to like?
In office terms, hot desking is a concept where you don’t use a set desk every day, rather sit wherever
you’d like. The concept became popular among offices in places where rents are high – like London, Tokyo
and Dubai, and in professions where people work different shifts – like in newspapers and call centres.
Research says as much as 40% of an office’s desks are unused on any given day. Staff might be on holiday,
work flexible hours or be stuck in back-to-back meetings. So, in comes hot desking!
It became popular in the 90s, and now is a well-established practice in many places – but it’s not without its
detractors.
Some say hot desking isolates people, leaving them feeling disconnected from the company and their work
colleagues, however; we very much disagree!
If you are already attuned to using a coworking space – and if you’re reading this, you probably are –
then the positives of hot desking are probably already clear to you.
Here are the top reasons why hot desking might be the right option for you:

1. It’s said to increase

communication and

collaboration

By its very nature, hot desking calls for bonding with whoever’s near. As you change your desk daily, you are
exposed to different people on a regular basis. This can lead to different conversations than you might engage
in were you to sit at one desk next to the same people every day.
Hot desking brings the opportunity to chat to people from different backgrounds and industries.
These conversations and informal networking opportunities are extremely useful for freelancers, start-ups and entrepreneurs alike!

Decades ago, there are very few of Dubai’s food loving population who would think about heading out to the type of Japanese restaurant Dubai is now famed for. Dubai’s hospitality industry began to cater to this new need which led to an influx of sushi and Japanese restaurants popping up all over the region. And with these restaurants and this cuisine came a whole new language to explain it.

Rethinking office fit out in Dubai to promote healthier living habits in the workforce

We are seeing an increase in the use of natural light in a number of office fit outs in Dubai. This not only saves money on energy bills but is also one component of occupant health affecting productivity and both physical and mental health. The important role that natural light plays in boosting morale and wellbeing among the workforce has resulted in the incorporation of large picture windows and open terraces that enhance natural light in the office and communal areas. This can reduce the number of physical effects such as eye fatigue and headaches.

We are also seeing Green Walls (panels of plants, grown vertically using hydroponics on structures that can be either free-standing or attached to walls) in a number of office fit outs in Dubai. With countless toxins found in our indoor environment, such as formaldehyde, VOCs, trichloroethylene, carbon monoxide and benzene, to name just a few, adding office plants has long been a solution for improving indoor air quality. Green walls do just that but on a much bigger scale. Not only does this improve air quality, it also provides a visual break, which studies suggest stimulates mental alertness.

DON’T JUST BE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY – KEEP THAT PRACTICE GOING!

We recently shared a post on our new integrated CSR strategy and the benefits we are already seeing as part of implementing this approach. What has really got us motivated lately are results of some basic measures we implemented to reduce our water consumption at our Jebel Ali headquarters.
Let’s go back to how this started. Earlier this year, we implemented a ‘green’ audit which involved assessing our consumption levels in six chief areas – water, electricity, fuel, general waste, sewage and paper. The audit is an ongoing process, and our initial results were quite a surprise… Despite operating in a LEED Gold-certified office, we discovered that our water consumption levels were higher than expected – each employee consumed an average of 178 litres of water per day!
We had a few brainstorming sessions with our team on what measures could help us reduce our water consumption. The team first identified seven ‘water zones’ across the office premises – areas that were using up a large amount of the total water consumed in the company. They installed a sub-meter on our main water line to monitor consumption by each zone and found that a large amount of water was being supplied to the garden area. A further evaluation showed that re-landscaping this area could decrease consumption by a massive 4,700 litres per day and, if this happened, would mean annual savings of at least AED 15,000 in operational costs.

TOP TRENDS INFLUENCING OFFICE FIT OUTS IN DUBAI TO BOOST PRODUCTIVITY IN THE WORKPLACE

Sustainable workplace and employee wellness and engagement are the emerging trends that are influencing office fit out in Dubai and the rest of the UAE. Get all three right, and you will be well on your way to creating a more productive workplace, according to recent studies.

Wellbeing at work means much more than taking care of employees’ basic needs; it fosters an atmosphere of healthy competition and processes that make the workplace more conducive to performance and positive thinking. This, in turn, boosts productivity and reduces stress levels.

Investing in the workspace is no longer considered an extra cost, but a productivity investment that enhances an organisation’s overall success. From paying more attention to the quality of lighting, indoor air, sound level and visual design in the office, companies are now understanding the role that the physical environment plays in promoting wellbeing at work.

FIT OUT IN DUBAI; A LOOK AT THE PAST AND FUTURE DESIGN TRENDS AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE INDUSTRY

Today, designs for fit out in Dubai are about more than aesthetics and functionality. It is, more than ever, about helping businesses create value. Dark, dull, monotone offices are fast becoming a thing of the past. With today’s employees spending more than 30 percent of their lives at work, building a flexible and creative environment that nurtures individual wellbeing, has a clear positive impact on a business’ bottom line. Not only are companies using office fit out design to attract and engage the best talent in the market, they recognise the workspace is an expression of a company’s visual identity and should reflect their brand image and reputation. There are several movements driving change in the workspace and these will have an impact on the way offices will be designed and fitted-out over the next few years.
The overarching principle impacting all levels of the construction industry globally is sustainable development. We expect that in the next 15 years, with the recent adoption of the new United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, to see a total shift in the construction and fit-out industries towards sustainability models. New regulations will be adopted, higher standards and consumer demand will increase pressure on the industry to implement environmentally responsible practices, and awareness and understanding of green practices at all levels of the construction chain will increase. In the near future, sustainable projects will be the norm, not the exception. The green building movement has picked up in the UAE too, with sustainability being at the core of UAE’s strategic plan ‘Vision 2021’. Local contractors will have to step up their game when it comes to integrating sustainability into their processes, there will be more eco products available in the market and legislation will also tighten up.
Another important change we see happening in workplace design for fit out in Dubai is the rethinking the use of space. The focus is shifting towards building facilities that will support cross-team collaboration and which allow teams to reshape the workspace to meet their evolving needs. For example, until recently open plan offices were considered the best environment for employees – encouraging collaboration, innovation and team work. Now many studies have proven that a lack of privacy negatively affects concentration levels, productivity and creativity so designers will start to create spaces that provide a perfect balance between collaboration and privacy. Many companies have yet to implement these changes, but designers, architects and workspace experts are introducing these principles into their projects. We will see more recreational areas, more spaces for individual retreat, more attention given to design elements that can have an impact on employees’ creativity, engagement and loyalty.
Technology has had a huge impact on workplace design and fit out in Dubai over the past decade, and we expect the smart building movement will pick up considerably in the next few years. Technology is shaping the way we communicate and interact with each other. Employees are increasingly more connected and mobile, switching between laptops, smartphones and tablets. Smart buildings mean that a higher degree of automation is now included in all projects. That’s why space and furniture can no longer be built the same way it was years ago. Modern, sustainable office buildings will be cost-efficient, integrating the latest technologies and mobility strategies. The space will be designed to consolidate a higher workplace density and will offer, at the same time, greater transparency and interaction. The workspace of the future will have to be efficient, sustainable and healthy, the right environment for a creative, productive and engaged workforce.
In terms of aesthetics, we see a growing demand for contemporary, minimalistic design solutions. Furniture design is encompassing the use of materials such as glass and steel, with ready-made furniture being designed to offer a much greater degree of flexibility. This means less demand for bespoke offerings, which is not bad a bad thing in our opinion. Prefabricated furniture, that allows for flexibility of configuration, ensures more consistent product quality and minimizes production time since there is no need for shop drawings, approvals, sourcing of materials or managing different lead times. This not only reduces the risk of project delays, but responds to businesses’ needs to build more with less, and at a reduced cost.

Sushi Counter's Ultimate Guide to Eating Sushi for the First Time

A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO SUSHI

Sushi Counter is the hippest and freshest sushi joint you can find in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Riyadh. Their mission is to consistently provide quality sushi to their patrons and to encourage (or tempt!) those who haven’t tasted one to try it right away. Sushi Counter doesn’t just serve Sushi, they live it. The philosophy and art of preparing the freshest, most wholesome ingredients and presenting them in the most modern attractive and appetising way, is what makes them different from any other sushi restaurants in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh.

Ask any sushi lover what they like about it and you’re likely to get all sorts of expressive answers. While some will tell you that it’s not much about the food but more of the experience, others will express how much they love their sushi – the combination of flavours and textures. People who “hate” sushi are usually those who have had a bad first experience with it and will no longer dare to try again. Sushi can be intimidating to the novice, so we’ve put together all our sushi tips to come up with this ultimate sushi guide.
1. What is Sushi?
So, you’ve never had sushi before but now you’re ready to try the world’s most popular Japanese food? We’re going to tell you what you’ve been missing and how you should start to navigate the world of this versatile cuisine. Sushi is a way of preparing food that can go from a street-corner cart to the most exclusive establishment. Sushi is a famous Japanese method of cooking and serving food, based on rice, vegetables, egg, and seafood. Sushi is often thought of as simply raw fish and rice, but there are many varieties of sushi nowadays, some don’t even fish at all!
best_sushi_delivery_dubai
What do you need to know about eating sushi?
1. If you like fish (generally), you are going to love sushi.

2. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, you can explore more options with cool refreshing veggie based rolls.

3. If you are health conscious or closely watching your diet, sushi is a great meal choice.
2. A Brief History of Sushi
The origins of Sushi are shrouded in the mists of time. It is thought to have originated in ancient China, where people used cooked rice to start a fermentation process to preserve fish. Moving to Japan, this method of preserving and serving fish in rice became popular in the 9th century alongside the adoption of Buddhism, as Buddhists abandoned eating meat and consumed rice, vegetable and small amounts of fish instead. Through the centuries, people adapted and changed the methods of preparing and serving sushi, speeding up the process of fermentation and finally beginning to serve fresh rather than preserved fish. Sushi was also once a food reserved for the elite because of the labour and expense involved in preparing it.

sushi_best_restaurant_dubai_delivery
Finally, in the early 19th century, a modern form of sushi was invented by street stall vendor, Hanaya Yoehi in what is now modern-day Tokyo. Rather than fermenting fish in packed salted rice, Yoehi developed a new style of tasty street food by adding vinegar and salt to just cooked rice served with slices of raw fresh fish. Soon, hundreds of other street food vendors began copying Yoehi’s innovation and this style of sushi spread throughout Japan.

In the 1960s, Japanese businessmen living in California imported their favourite food. The first restaurant serving sushi opened in 1966 in Little Tokyo area. For the first time, Americans were able to try sushi and the little Japanese cuisine became widely known. Soon, American-based chefs began to innovate - creating the first Sushi “rolls” and adding untraditional ingredients like avocado and cream cheese. From America, sushi restaurants started to pop up all around the world, eventually becoming one of the most popular and recognizable global cuisines.
3. Health Benefits of Sushi (and Warning!)
Sushi is packed with nutrients because it relies on fish and vegetables as the main ingredients. Fish provides a lean source of low-calorie, high-quality protein. It's also low in saturated fats and cholesterol, making it a heart-healthy food choice. A healthy diet should incorporate fish at least twice a week, according to the American Heart Association. This is because fish contains high amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to the healthy functioning of the brain. Omega-3 fatty acids are helpful for neurological disorders and may help to fight depression, ADHD, Alzheimer’s, dementia and diabetes. Fish also contains other healthy vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin D.
healthy_sushi_vegan_best_restaurant_japanese_dubai

The seaweed wrapping of sushi rolls, Nori, is packed with nutrients. It is low in calories and contains vitamins A, B-6, and C. It also has a healthy serving of Iodine, which is essential for hormone function. Recent studies indicate that seaweed proteins may reduce blood pressure and improve heart health.

Sushi, however healthy it is, is not always a low-calorie option. Because the portions are small, it can be very easy to load up, taking in more calories than necessary, especially if other ingredients and condiments are added like cream cheese and mayonnaise. So, if you start to crave for more sushi after your first order, try other delicious yet lighter options such as the vegan varieties.
Eating Sushi for the First Time
1. Navigating the Menu
A sushi menu may seem complicated to the newbie, but there are basically four kinds of Sushi.
Nigiri Sushi – It is a small serving of cold molded rice with a slice of raw fish on top. The first type of sushi was developed in Japan and considered the most traditional of all the sushi types.
Maki is a combination of rice, vegetables and fish rolled up in tightly in thin sheets of flattened dried seaweed, called “Nori”. Maki is served sliced into six or eight pieces. Sometimes, the rolls (uramaki) are served inside out with the rice on the outside, while the nori and fish or vegetables in the middle. Maki can also be served as a kind of seaweed cone (temaki) filled with rice, fish and/or veggies.
Chirashi is a bowl of vinegared rice with a piece of fish on top.
Sashimi is a thin slice of raw fish. In some cases, the rice is served on the side, though it is not really necessary.
Sushi can be a disorienting experience if you are not used to it especially when they are served and eaten cold. Many restaurants, like Sushi Counter, will also have other cooked and hot items on the menu like soups, and noodles alongside other Asian inspired hot main dishes, like curries, so there is no need to worry if you really don’t like cold food.
2. Ordering Tips
If you are having sushi for the first time, it is a good idea to be with friends who are already sushi enthusiasts. Another option is to ask the sushi chef for guidance on what and how much to order. As a beginner, it’s best to go slow and ease your way into the wonderful world of sushi. Sushi is prepared with only a handful of ingredients, but the combination of flavours, textures, and tastes is amazing. Since sushi has evolved through its long history, restaurants of today are constantly innovating and adding new combinations, which are just as authentic as traditional sushi. This is part of what makes this cuisine so interesting.

Start slowly by choosing items that are more familiar or those with ingredients that you are more comfortable with until you become accustomed to the textures and flavours unique to sushi. It’s also good to prepare yourself mentally. If you encounter something you don’t like, don’t force yourself. Sushi should be a fun learning experience. Leave it and try something else. Below are some other tips that may be helpful for your first take on sushi.
